Meetings:

  • City Council Meeting: August 12, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.
  • Planning Commission Meeting: August 19, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.

 

CITY MANAGER:

Miscellaneous:

  • Special City Council Meeting on July 30th at 4:30 p.m. regarding extending the city pool season an additional three weeks. City Council approved for the pool to stay open with a limited schedule of activities and public swim on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The pool will remain open from August 12th through August 28th.
  • I met with City of Red Bluff City Manager, Tom Westbrook, to share information and trends within the two cities.
  • I attended the Tehama County Summer Regional Coordination Meeting. The topics were the homeless Pit Count, housing, and developments.
  • City Council approved the Recreation Center and Community Plaza Project. This project includes a recreation center with a gymnasium, city plaza with shade structures, an amphitheater, and splash pad. The project is currently out to bid with a September 2nd closing date. This project is greatly funded by grant money.
  • Work to repair the snack bar at Yost Park is completed.
  • Staff continue to work with developers on residential and commercial developments.
  • Code Enforcement remains active. Citizens can do their part by keeping properties clean and clear of debris and follow State laws and City codes.
  • As part of the new finance software implementation, efforts to streamline the utility billing process will be made. This may alter the time of month you receive your water and sewer bill. Please continue to pay your water and sewer bill upon receipt.
  • Tehama County Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 6th from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Corning Library Branch. Open Q&A for Tehama County District 4 Supervisor Matt Hansen and District 5 Supervisor Greg Jones.

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

BUILDING DEPARTMENT:

This week, the Building Division received twelve new permit applications and conducted ten inspections. The Division also remained active at the public counter assisting numerous residents and contractors with inquiries related to the built environment within the City of Corning.  We remain committed to serving the community and continuing our role as a reliable source of information and support.

 

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:

Community Events:

      City Staff has been preparing Yost Park for the 16th Annual Tucker Mesker Memorial Softball Tournament that is taking place August 1st – 3rd.

Corning Well Project: The bid deadline for the Corning Well Project was Wednesday, July 30th at 2:00 PM. The City received three (3) bid submissions. Staff is currently reviewing the bid packets for completeness and compliance. The lowest responsive and responsible bid will be presented to City Council for approval on August 12th.

Water:

  • With the hot weather water leaks continue to pop up. The Public Works crew has been working diligently to address each one as they come up.

Junior Giants Baseball Achievements –

We’re proud to announce that our Minors and Majors teams reached the Home Run Reading level in the Round the Bases Reading Program. Thanks to their hard work, four teams have earned a trip to the Junior Giants Festival at Oracle Park in San Francisco this Sunday August 3, to celebrate with a day of games and baseball fun. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers for your time and dedication, and to the players and families who were part of this summer season. We look forward to another great year ahead!

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Staff has 4 items on the agenda for this month’s Planning Commission meeting,

  • A commercial tentative map, with a conditional use permit and a mitigated negative declaration.
  • A Conditional Use Permit for a new Food Truck
  • A Conditional Use Permit for a commercial business along HWY 99W
  • A variance for a single-family residence to build into the side setbacks.

Staff continue to work on the Housing Element requirements.

Updates on Code Enforcement:

Tehama County Environmental Health continues to shut down the vendor that sets up in the orchard at Blackburn and Edith. The Tehama County Sheriff’s Department has agreed to help them out as they do not have the staff to work after hours.

Update Commercial Properties that have been noticed regarding long term vacant buildings.

3090 Highway 99W – Gurdev Singh – First Citation sent out. There has been no response, staff will start the hearing process and if there is still no response, we will take this property to a receiver to ask if they are interested in it. Being reviewed by legal council

1213 Solano St – Francisco Villalobos -No response on my certified letter. The certified letter was returned unclaimed; staff will be discussing the matter with legal counsel. Being reviewed by legal counsel.

 

Sergeant Curiel and staff went out on Friday evening and shut down another illegal vendor that was set up under the awning at 1421 Solano Street. Please report any illegal vendors to code enforcement.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 146 calls for service, there were 80 officer-initiated incidents, including 40 traffic stops, and a total of 25 officer reports were taken. Officers made 7 misdemeanor arrests, 7 felony arrests, issued 6 misdemeanor citations, 1 parking, and 9 infractions during the period of July 23, 2025, through July 29, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of July 23, 2025, through July 29, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 324 inbound calls for service and made 87 outbound calls. In addition, they responded to 43 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 10 calls for service last week, they were: 8 medicals, 1 traffic collision and 1 public service.
