CITY MANAGER:

I will be out of the office Friday, April 5, 2024.

I would like to wish Accounting Manager Mary Brimm the best as she pursues new interests and adventures.  Mary has been an integral part of the Management and Finance Department team for several years.  Thank you for your faithful and dedicated service to the City and the Corning community.

Friday, April 12, 2024:  I have been asked to speak at Maywood DaVinci Middle School about my career and the potential career opportunities in local government/City of Corning.

Past Meetings:

  • Met with Red Bluff City Manager to discuss common topics and collaborate.
  • On April 1, 2024 the Airport Commission met for their quarterly meeting.  The main topics were projects and grant funding.

Future Meetings:

  • The City Council will meet on April 9th at 6:30 p.m.
  • Library Commission will meet for their quarterly meeting April 10th at 3:00 p.m.
  • The City Council and Planning Commission will hold a joint meeting April 16th at 6:30 p.m.

Ongoing Projects:

-California Department of Water Resources Grant for a new municipal well.

-Recreation Center and City Plaza Project

-Housing Element Update

-Annual Financial Audit

-Fiscal Year 2024-2025 budget preparation

CITY CLERK:

Commission Vacancies:

The City’s Airport, Recreation, and Library Commissions each have one vacant position.  If interested, please complete an application at https://www.corning.org/documents/commission-application/ and submit it to City Clerk Lisa Linnet at llinnet@corning.org.  All three commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

City Pool:

City Staff have started cleaning and preparing the pools for the upcoming pool season.  Minor maintenance at the pools will be completed in the upcoming weeks.

Olive View and West Street Schools Connectivity Project:

Builder Solutions, Inc. continues to work on the Olive View and West Street School Projects. The Olive View Project is near completion with final sign-off remaining.  The West Street Project is anticipated to be completed by the beginning of April depending on the weather.

Clark Park Parking Lot:

The Clark Park Parking Lot Phase 1 project began April 1st.  Phase 1 consists of pulverizing, grading, and compacting the parking lot.  The parking lot with be closed until construction is complete.  The project is anticipated to be completed by April 5th.

Water infrastructure:

The Public Works Crew has been working on getting the Butte Well back online by the end of the week.  Water line repairs continue at various locations throughout the City.

Alleyways:

Tehama County Probation Crew Members will be working on cleaning the overgrown vegetation in alleyways throughout the City in the upcoming weeks.

 

RECREATION:

April 2 Tuesday Night Market:

Thank you to all involved in the opening day of our Tuesday Night Market, it was a wonderful evening.  See you at the next one on May 7th at which will have the Corning Union High School Art Show being held at Rodgers Theater.

Pool Lifeguard Recruitment & Interviews:

We are in the process of lifeguard interviews and should have our whole crew hired by the end of the week.  We had an overwhelming number of applicants from some very talented individuals.

PLANNING:

April 16th City Council/Planning Commission Meeting:

We will be having a joint meeting with the City Council and Planning Commission on April 16th at 6:30 p.m.  It is open to the public and the discussion will be housing needs in Corning.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 135 calls for service, there were 60 officer-initiated incidents, including 17 traffic stops, and a total of 20 officer reports taken.  Officers made 3 felony arrests, 5 misdemeanor arrests, and issued 3 misdemeanor citations during the period of March 28, 2024 through April 3, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the two-week period of March 28, 2024 through April 3, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 275 inbound calls for service.  In addition, they responded to 29 incoming 911 calls.  All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins.  Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 24 calls for service last week, they were:  18 medicals, 1 traffic collision, and 5 public service.

Training:

Training last week consisted of proper placement and use of ground ladders.  We also “sounded” the roof and climbed ladder in full turnouts and SCBAs.
