Trax buses are also available to ride for free for anyone needing a ride to a cooling location.

County Libraries locations and the P.A.T.H. Shelter – Red Bluff are available colling locations. Please check days and hours of operation.

Events:

  • July 16th at 5:30pm: City Council/Recreation Center and City Plaza Ad Hoc Meeting: CDBG Informational Meeting

Miscellaneous:

  • July 16th: Joint meeting between the City Council and the Recreation Center and City Plaza Ad Hoc to review final plans and receive information regarding the CSBG Grant.
  • Managers and I attended Sexual Harassment Prevention Training on Thursday (7/11/2024).
  • Staff continue to work with Housing Tools on the Housing Element. We anticipate a draft document to begin the administrative review.
  • We continue to work on a new municipal water well to benefit residents. We continue to work with the Corning Healthcare District to discuss the location of the new City well on Healthcare District property by way of an easement.  There was consensus from the Directors.  We greatly appreciate the partnership and willingness to work together for the benefit of the community. This is funded by the Department of Warter Resources via a grant.
  • Staff continue to work on the City Recreation Center and Plaza Project. The Consultant is working on bid documents.
  • Staff is working with Adams Ashby Group to submit a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). This grant funding would be for the Recreation Center and City Plaza.  The meeting listed above on July 16th would be open to the public for additional information.

CITY CLERK:

Commission Vacancies:

The City’s Airport, Recreation, and Library Commissions each have one vacant position.  If interested, please complete an application at https://www.corning.org/documents/commission-application/ and submit it to City Clerk Lisa Linnet at llinnet@corning.org.  All three commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Water Quality Report 2023:

The 2023 Water Quality Report/Consumer Confidence Report has been completed for the City of Corning’s water system.  A copy of the report can be found on the City’s website at: https://www.corning.org/documents/water-quality-report-2023/.

West Street School Connectivity Project:

Builder Solutions, Inc. continues to work on the West Street Connectivity Project.  Their remaining scope includes the crosswalk at the intersection of Solano Street and West Street.  Construction of the crosswalk is anticipated to be completed by the end of the week.

Water:

With the hot weather water leaks continue to pop up.  The Public Works crew has been working diligently to address each one as they occur.

7th Cycle Housing Element Update:

The City’s 7th Cycle Housing Element public draft has been posted for review at www.corning.org.  If you have any comments, please email cmeeds@corning.org.

 

RECREATION:

July 16th Joint City Council/Recreation Ad-Hoc Committee Public Meeting:

A City Council/Recreation Ad-Hoc Committee Joint Public Meeting is scheduled for July 16th at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to discuss the latest update on the Recreation Center and City Plaza.  Please come and join us.

July 20th Fun Run:

Corning Recreation will be holding their first Fun Run titled “Christmas in July” on July 20th at Northside Park starting at 9:30 a.m.  The event will be for youth ages 2-16 and will have water obstacles, a slip-n-slide, photo opportunity with Santa in his board shorts, along with many prizes.  The cost is $5.00/child to participate.  For further information go to www.corning.org.

July 27th MLB Pitch, Hit & Run Event:

Corning Recreation was recently approved to hold an MLB “Pitch, Hit & Run” Event for ages 7-14 to test their skills and be entered to win free tickets to the World Series.  The skills event will be held at Yost Park on July 27th starting at 9:30 a.m.  This is a free event.  You can register your child at https://www.mlb.com/pitch-hit-and-run.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 152 calls for service, there were 90 officer-initiated incidents, including 22 traffic stops, and a total of 23 officer reports taken.  Officers made 9 misdemeanor arrests, 3 felony arrests, issued 7 misdemeanor citations and 3 infractions during the period of July 4, 2024 through July 10, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the period of July 4, 2024 through July 10, 2024, the Dispatch Center received 352 inbound calls for service.  In addition, they responded to 36 incoming 911 calls.  All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

Community Service Officer Estes completed a PC832 Arrest course.  All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins.  Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 27 calls for service last week, they were:  17 medicals, 7 fires, 1investigation, 1 traffic collision, and 1 public service.
