CITY MANAGER:

On behalf of the entire city team, I would like to extend my heartfelt wishes to all the incredible mothers in our community. We celebrate your unwavering strength, endless compassion, and the many ways you inspire and support those around you. Your contributions make our city a better place every day.

Meetings:

  • City Council Meeting: May 13, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • On Tuesday, May 13th, the Capital Improvement Project list for the fiscal year 2025/26 budget will be reviewed by City Council.
  • On Wednesday, I participated in the Pop-in Poetry event at West Street School. I read a poem and handed out popcorn to a second-grade class.
  • On Thursday, I participated in the Corning High School Senior Exit Interviews. I had a great group of graduate seniors. The future is bright with this group.
  • On Friday, Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) is hosting the celebration of the Magnolia Meadows development.
  • On Thursday, May 15th at 3:30 p.m., the Corning Rotary is hosting a ribbon cutting for the recent improvements at Northside Park. Thank you to Rotary for your continued support and dedication to the community of Corning.
  • Staff continue to work on the Tyler Technology, finance software, upgrade.
  • Staff continue to finalize information with the Salado Apartment Phase II developers and coordination.
  • Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget process is underway. Department head budget meetings have been completed and continued conversations will happen in the coming weeks. We do expect a decline in the revenue and plan to make adjustments accordingly.
  • Staff continue to meet with developers regarding housing and commercial developments in Corning.

 

CITY CLERK:

On Wednesday, Brant and I participated in the Pop-in Poetry event at West Street School. I read a poem and handed out popcorn to a Kindergarten class.

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 1 vacant position

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:

Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project:
VSS International was awarded the Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project at the April 8th City Council meeting. Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:
VSS International continues to make progress on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project.

  • City staff and the contractor are coordinating with local schools to minimize traffic disruptions during student drop-off and pick-up hours.
  • The current phase of construction has been completed, with work scheduled to resume at the beginning of June.

City Pool:
City Staff has prepared the pool for the upcoming swim season and passed inspection. Second-grade swim lessons will begin on Monday morning! The pool opens to the public on Monday June 9th.

 

RECREATION DEPARTMENT:

Get ready to roll! Registration is now open for the upcoming Box Car Races, taking place during the Tuesday Night Market on June 3rd. Start building your cars and prepare for an evening of fun and friendly competition!

Starting June 2nd, we will be transitioning away from the membership format and returning to a class-based schedule, with classes held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Planning Commission Meeting:

The Planning Department will hold a Planning Commission meeting on May 20th, the commission will be presented with a Conditional Use Permit for Cecy’s Taco Food Truck to be placed on the west end of the Napa Store. They will also be presented with Ordinance 713 which is an Ordinance adding 4 new sections and amending 11 Chapters of the Corning Municipal Zoning Code.

The City Council will make the final approval on a Planning Commission recommendation on Tentative Parcel Map 2025-01, a map to divide a residential lot on 0 Lincoln Ave into two residential lots.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 133 calls for service, there were 166 officer-initiated incidents, including 82 traffic stops, and a total of 32 officer reports were taken. Officers made 13 misdemeanor arrests, (2 of which were juveniles), 3 felony arrests, issued 15 misdemeanor citations and 2 infractions during the period of April 30, 2025, through May 6, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of April 30, 2025, through May 6, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 320 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 37 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 27 calls for service last week, they were: 17 medicals, 3 fires, 1 traffic collision, 3 public service, 1 investigation and 2 hazardous conditions.
