CITY MANAGER:

Civic pride is the action we take. Sweep the sidewalks, pull the weeds, mow the lawns, pick up the trash.

Meetings:

  • City Council Meeting: June 10, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • Staff has been working with the insurance adjuster on the Yost Park Snack Bar.
  • On Tuesday, I attended the Community Schools Advisory Team Meeting. This group is focused on Community Schools planning and implementation. It’s an opportunity to collaborate and share information as well.
  • On Thursday I met with the Corning Health Care District Director. We had a great discussion about what the City has going on currently and the projects we have planned for the upcoming fiscal year.
  • Staff and I met with developers regarding a commercial project west of I-5. The discussion was focused around the civil plans, County and Caltrans requirements. As well as increased costs and funding for the project.
  • Staff continue to work on the finance software upgrade. A lot of time and work will go into this project. In the end the city will have a modern finance system.
  • Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget process is underway. Department head budget meetings have been completed and continued conversations will happen in the coming weeks. We do expect a decline in the revenue and plan to make adjustments accordingly. Budget will be presented to City Council at the June 10th meeting.

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:

Crew Work Schedule:

The crew has switched to summer hours (6 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) as of Tuesday May 27th, 2025. The meter reader will remain on his regular schedule (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.).

Street Impact – Tuesday Night Market:
The Corning Tuesday Night Market will take place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Solano Street will be closed between 3rd Street and 6th Street to accommodate the event.

  • Street closure begins: Approximately 3:30 p.m. for event preparation.
  • Street reopens: Following the conclusion of the event.
    We encourage residents and visitors to attend and enjoy the local vendors, food, and entertainment.

Current Project Updates:

Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project:
VSS International continues to make progress on the Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project.

  • The current phase of construction has been completed, with work scheduled to resume on June 11.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

City Pool:
The pool opens to the public on Monday, June 9th.

Cal Fire Work Crew:

The Cal Fire Work Crew was out this week providing weed abatement services throughout the City Alleyways and will continue their efforts next week.

 

RECREATION DEPARTMENT:

Upcoming events

Registration is now open for the upcoming Box Car Races, taking place next week during the Tuesday Night Market on June 3rd. Start building your cars and get ready for an evening full of fun, excitement, and friendly competition. This is a free event. If you need a cardboard box to get started, stop by City Hall—we have plenty available at no cost. Pre-registration is required at https://corningrecreation.recdesk.com/Community/Program.

Our Ballet Folklórico and Corning Dance Crew classes will be performing at the Jr. Rodeo on May 30th at 6:30 PM and at the Tuesday Night Market on June 3rd at 6:00 PM. Come out and cheer them on while enjoying an evening with the community.

The Junior Giants free summer Baseball program is open for Registration!

The Junior Giants free summer baseball program is now open for registration. Sign up at https://www.mlb.com/giants/community/junior-giants-leagues and be sure to register under the City of Corning. We’re excited for another great season and are currently seeking volunteers. PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Planning Commission Meeting:

At the May 20th Planning Commission meeting the commission approved Cecy’s Tacos to set up her food truck in the area of Napa Auto Parts store, there is a 10-day grace period, so she will be issued her permit on May 30th. Also Ordinance 713 was presented and the Planning commission recommended 4-0 to have the City Council approve the Ordinance.

City Council Meeting:

On May 27th the Ordinance was presented to the City Council, which approved it in the first reading.

Ordinance 713 is an Ordinance updating the City of Corning’s zoning code to meet the laws of the state.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 162 calls for service, there were 139 officer-initiated incidents, including 76 traffic stops, and a total of 27 officer reports were taken. Officers made 7 misdemeanor arrests, 6 felony arrests (2 of which were juveniles), issued 8 misdemeanor citations and 9 infractions during the period of May 21, 2025, through May 27, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of May 21, 2025, through May 27, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 320 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 37 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 24 calls for service last week, they were: 17 medicals, 4 fires, 2 public service and 1 investigation.
