CITY MANAGER:

This Memorial Day, we honor the courage of those who served by coming together as a community — united in remembrance, gratitude, and hope.

 Meetings:

  • City Council Meeting: May 27, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • City Hall will be closed on May 26th in honor of Memorial Day.
  • Staff has been working with the insurance adjuster on the Yost Park Snack Bar.
  • On Tuesday, we met for the 2x2x2 Meeting. This meeting is between the City of Corning, Corning Elementary School District and the Corning Union High School District. It’s an opportunity to collaborate and share information.
  • With the help of Butte Environmental, we are planting approximately 31 trees in city parks this week. We are grateful for the trees, volunteers to plant the trees and the collaborative efforts.
  • Staff continue to work on the finance software upgrade. A lot of time and work will go into this project. In the end the city will have a modern finance system.
  • Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget process is underway. Department head budget meetings have been completed and continued conversations will happen in the coming weeks. We do expect a decline in the revenue and plan to make adjustments accordingly. Budget will be presented to City Council at the June 10th meeting.

 

CITY CLERK:

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 1 vacant position

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:

 Crew Work Schedule:

The crew will switch to summer hours (6am-2:30pm) Tuesday May 27th, 2025. The meter reader will remain on his regular schedule (8am-4:30pm).

 Current Project Updates:

Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project:
Construction has begun. Drivers should anticipate traffic delays between Houghton Ave. and 3rd St. during project construction.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:
VSS International continues to make progress on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project.

  • City staff and the contractor are coordinating with local schools to minimize traffic disruptions during student drop-off and pick-up hours.
  • The current phase of construction has been completed, with work scheduled to resume at the beginning of June.

City Pool:
The pool opens to the public on Monday, June 9th.

Cal Fire Work Crew:

The Cal Fire Work Crew was out this week providing weed abatement services throughout the City alleyways and will continue their efforts next week.

Registration is open for the upcoming Box Car Races, taking place during the Tuesday Night Market on June 3rd! Start building your cars now and gear up for an evening of fun, excitement, and friendly competition. This is a free event, and if you need a box to get started, swing by City Hall. Also, don’t miss the final performances of our Ballet Folklórico class before they head off for summer break! Catch them at: The Jr. Rodeo on May 30th at 6 PM & The Tuesday Night Market on June 3rd. Come out, cheer them on, and enjoy a great time with your community!

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Planning Commission Meeting:

The Conditional Use Permit for Cecy’s Taco Food Truck to be placed on the west end of the Napa Store was approved by the Planning Commission. Ordinance 713 which is an Ordinance adding 4 new sections and amending 11 Chapters of the Corning Municipal Zoning Code was also approved and will be presented to the City Council for approval.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 150 calls for service, there were 132 officer-initiated incidents, including 70 traffic stops, and a total of 30 officer reports were taken. Officers made 11 misdemeanor arrests, 2 felony arrests, issued 12 misdemeanor citations, 4 parking citations, and 13 infractions during the period of May 14, 2025, through May 20, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of May 14, 2025, through May 20, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 309 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 31 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 15 calls for service last week, they were: 12 medicals, 1 fire, 1 public service and 1 investigation.
