CITY MANAGER:

The best communities aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones with the people who show up. People who care. People who believe their place matters. It’s about doing what you can with what you’ve got. It’s about getting better. It’s about pride.

Meetings:

  • Planning Commission Meeting: May 20, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.
  • City Council Meeting: May 27, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • On Tuesday, May 13th, the Capital Improvement Project list for the fiscal year 2025/26 budget was presented to the Council and priorities and feedback was provided.
  • On Wednesday, I attended the Corning in the Morning Networking Event hosted by Mechanics Bank. Join us next month, on June 2 at 7:30 a.m. at The Vault (1124 Solano Street, Corning, CA) with Sweet Swirls Cakes and Confections.
  • On Thursday, I attended the ribbon cutting at North Side for the Rotary Club project. The tables and slabs were replaced and the flagpole, seating area and water fountain were replaced. Thank you to the Corning Rotary Club and the contractors involved in the success of this project.
  • On Thursday night I attended the Corning Rotary Club Centennial Dinner. On behalf of the City of Corning, we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Corning Rotary Club for 100 years of outstanding service to our community. Your dedication, support, and leadership have made a lasting impact—from successful public projects to countless acts of community service. Your century of commitment is a true testament to the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.” Thank you for making Corning a better place for all. Congratulations on this incredible milestone!
  • I met with the Corning Chamber of Commerce representatives regarding the work they are doing for our local businesses, economic development, and events.
  • Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget process is underway. Department head budget meetings have been completed and continued conversations will happen in the coming weeks. We do expect a decline in the revenue and plan to make adjustments accordingly.

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:

National Public Works Week:

The week of May 18th – 24th is National Public Works Week!  We would like to thank our Public Works Staff for all their hard work on maintaining our streets, water system, sewer system, City buildings and parks.  Their hard work and dedication to the City of Corning is invaluable and allows our community to function daily.  Thank You!!

Current Project Updates:

Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project:
Construction is scheduled to begin Monday May 18th. Drives should anticipate traffic delays between Houghton Ave and 3rd St during project construction.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:
VSS International continues to make progress on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project.

  • City staff and the contractor are coordinating with local schools to minimize traffic disruptions during student drop-off and pick-up hours.
  • The current phase of construction has been completed, with work scheduled to resume at the beginning of June.

City Pool:
The pool opens to the public on Monday, June 9th.

 

RECREATION DEPARTMENT:

Get ready to roll! Registration is now open for the upcoming Box Car Races, taking place during the Tuesday Night Market on June 3rd. Start building your cars and prepare for an evening of fun and friendly competition!

New Classes Starting Soon – Registration is now open!

Spots are limited, so be sure to sign up before they fill up.

  • Ballet 1 – Begins June 10th (Tuesdays & Thursdays | 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM)

  • Jiu Jitsu Program Update:

Starting June 2nd, we will be transitioning away from the membership format and returning to a class-based schedule, with classes held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Planning Commission Meeting:

The Planning Department will hold a Planning Commission meeting on May 20th, the commission will be presented with a Conditional Use Permit for Cecy’s Taco Food Truck to be placed on the west end of the Napa Store, they will also be presented with Ordinance 713 which is an Ordinance adding 4 new sections and amending 11 Chapters of the Corning Municipal Zoning Code.

City Council Approval:

The City Council will make the final approval on a Planning Commission recommendation on Tentative Parcel Map 2025-01, a map to divide a residential lot on 0 Lincoln Ave into two residential lots.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

This week was observed as National Police Week. Our law enforcement officers are most deserving of our heartfelt gratitude for their dedication and service. It is the civic duty of every citizen to support and appreciate their efforts, working together to build a safer and more promising future for our community.

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 165 calls for service, there were 147 officer-initiated incidents, including 55 traffic stops, and a total of 27 officer reports were taken. Officers made 6 misdemeanor arrests, (1 of which was a juvenile), 4 felony arrests, issued 8 misdemeanor citations, 2 parking citations, and 3 infractions during the period of May 7, 2025, through May 13, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of May 7, 2025, through May 13, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 383 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 38 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 27 calls for service last week, they were: 20 medicals, 2 fires, 2 traffic collisions, 2 public service and 1 investigation.

Training:

Training for the CVFD consisted of entry to a burning building and doing a primary search for possible victims.
