CITY MANAGER:

Grant administration for grant funded programs or projects Request for Proposals:

Outreach is currently open for proposals for contract/grant administration for grant funded programs/projects; the closing response date is Tuesday, May 14th at 5pm.  We look forward to the opportunities this may bring to the City for Community Development Block Grants and other grants.

Fiscal Year Budget:

Staff continues working through the Fiscal Year 2024/25 Budget process.  Departments have submitted budget requests/adjustments, and Fiscal Staff is reviewing expense budgets and revenues.  Capital Improvement Projects will be reviewed and presented to the City Council at the May 14 City Council Meeting.

 Meetings:

  • Monday, May 6th:  Met with developers with interest in developing in the City.
  • Tuesday, May 7th:  Participated in the Corning High School Senior Exit Interviews.
  • Wednesday, May 8th:  Along with Public Works Director Elijah Stanley, we met at Northside Park/City Pool regarding possible community projects at the park.
  • Tuesday, May 14th:  The City Council will hold their regularly scheduled meeting.

Please be a responsible citizen and a good neighbor.  Keep vegetation under control, debris disposed of properly and broken down/abandoned vehicles off the streets.  Take pride in your community and neighborhoods.

 

CITY CLERK:

Commission Vacancies:

The City’s Airport, Recreation, and Library Commissions each have one vacant position.  If interested, please complete an application at https://www.corning.org/documents/commission-application/ and submit it to City Clerk Lisa Linnet at llinnet@corning.org.  All three commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Tree Removal:

  • PG&E and Public Works have identified (8) eight City trees that cause safety concerns as a part of PG&E’s Vegetation Management Program. Wright Trees has been contracted by PG&E and will begin tree removal on May 14 and carry through to the end of June

Fire Mowing:

  • The Public Works Crew continues to fire mow around town to prep for the upcoming fire season.

West Street School Connectivity Project:

  • Builder Solutions, Inc. continues to work on the West Street School Project. The West Street Project is anticipated to be completed by early May, depending on the weather.

Pool

  • The Public Works Crew has prepped the pool for 2nd-grade swim lessons. Swimming lessons will begin on Monday, May 13 and end on Friday, May 17.  The pool opens to the public on June 10.

 

PLANNING:

May 21st Planning Commission Meeting:

The Planning Department has 4 Conditional Use Permits at the Commissions meeting in May to be held on Tuesday May 21st at 6:30 PM.

7th Cycle Housing Element Update:

We continue to work with Placeworks on the 7th Cycle Housing Element and are planning to have an administrative draft ready for review next month in June.

 

RECREATION:

May 7th Tuesday Night Market:

The Tuesday Night Market was a wonderful evening.  The Corning Union High School held their Art Show in Rodgers Theater during the market; we have some talented youth in our community. Thank you to all the vendors and attendees for supporting this community event.

Co-Ed Youth Flag Football Program:

We are about ready to wrap up registration for our CO-ED Youth Flag Football Program.

Swim Season Registration:

We opened registration for the 2024 Swim Season at the pool on the first of May.  You can now register for Lap Swim, Swim Lessons, Water Aerobics and Pool Parties.  To register go to www.corning.org.

Recreation Center and City Plaza Plans:

Staff has received the plans for the Recreation Center and City Plaza, they are currently being reviewed.

Summer Recreation Classes:

Summer recreation classes will be opening up very soon, stay tuned to our Corning Recreation social media accounts.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 140 calls for service, there were 46 officer-initiated incidents, including 13 traffic stops, and a total of 16 officer reports taken.  Officers made 5 misdemeanor arrests, issued 2 misdemeanor citations and 1 infraction during the period of May 2, 2024 through May 8, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the period of May 2, 2024 through May 8, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 300 inbound calls for service.  In addition, they responded to 39 incoming 911 calls.  All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

News:

Corning Police Department attended and participated in the Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony on May 8, 2024, at High Point Assembly in Red Bluff.

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 27 calls for service last week, they were:  22 medicals, 4 fires, and 1 investigation.
