CITY MANAGER:

I would like to wish Fire Dispatcher, Troy Mura, a happy and healthy retirement.  Troy’s last day was Thursday, March 28, 2024.  Thank you for your faithful and dedicated service to the Corning community.

Past Meetings:

  • On Tuesday, 3/26/2024 the City Council approved the Garbage Rate Increase that will go into effect April 1st.  The new rates will be:  96- gal. cart $28.39/mo.; 64-gal. cart $26.97/mo.; and 32-gal. senior cart $14.40/mo.

Future Meeting:

  • Airport Commission will meet for their quarterly meeting on Monday, April 1, 2024 at 4:00 p.m.
  • Library Commission will meet for their quarterly meeting on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

Ongoing Projects:

-California Department of Water Resources Grant for a new municipal well.

-Recreation Center and City Plaza Project

-Housing Element Update

-Annual Financial Audit

-Fiscal Year 2024-2025 budget preparation

CITY CLERK:

Commission Vacancies:

The City’s Airport, Recreation, and Library Commissions each have one vacant position.  If interested in serving on one of these Commissions, please complete an application at https://www.corning.org/documents/commission-application/ and submit it to City Clerk Lisa Linnet at llinnet@corning.org.  All three commissions meet on specified days the first week of the month quarterly in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Community Event/Street Impact:

  • Rise Up Easter Event and Egg Hunt will take place this Saturday, March 30, 2024 at New Life Assembly of God from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Peach Street North of Solano Street will be closed during this event.
  • The Corning Community Egg Hunt will take place this Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Clark Park from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be no road closures for this event but, due to the anticipated attendance, be aware of traffic congestion and pedestrians not only on Fig Lane but the surrounding streets as well.
  • The first of 5 Corning Tuesday Night Markets will be occurring this Tuesday, April 2, 2024 starting at 5:00 p.m. and going until 8:00 p.m. Solano Street will be closed between 3rd and 6th Streets for the event.  Solano Street closure will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. to prepare for the event and will re-open once the event has finished.

Olive View and West Street Schools Connectivity Project:

Builder Solutions, Inc. continues to work on the Olive View and West Street School Projects.  The Olive View Project is near completion with final sign-off remaining.  The West Street Project is anticipated to be completed by the beginning of April, depending on the weather.

Clark Park Parking Lot

The Clark Park Parking Lot Phase 1 Project will begin April 1st.  Phase 1 consists of pulverizing, grading, and compacting the parking lot.  Because of this, the parking lot with be closed until construction is complete.  The project is anticipated to be completed by April 5th.

 

CITY ENGINEER:

New Chemical Tanks at Wastewater Treatment Plant:

Construction has started at the Wastewater Treatment Plant for the installation of the new chemical tanks.  This project will allow the City to start using liquid chemicals in place of the existing gas products which are more readily available and safer to use.  The estimated completion date is September 30th.

 

RECREATION:

Tuesday Night Market Vendor Applications:

The 2024 Tuesday Night Market Vendor applications are available on the website at www.corning.org.  This is a free event for vendors and the public.

Tuesday Night Market:

The theme for the first Tuesday Night slated for April 2nd will be Easter.  The market opens April 2nd at 5:00 p.m. on Third through 6th Streets.  There will be an Easter Egg Hunt between 3rd and 6th Streets.  Come on out and listen to the sounds of Irish Cement, have a cold one from the Rotary Beer Garden, try one of the great food vendors, and browse through the various vendors.  The Corning Jr. Cardettes dance team will be performing and so will the Lights Camera Dance class.

Spring Recreation Classes:

Spring Recreation Classes will begin in a week, make sure you have saved your spot in a class.  View the class options at www.corning.org.

PLANNING:

Ordinances 708 (Mobile Vending) and 709 (Sidewalk Vending):

Ordinances 708 and 709 went before the City Council for final adoption at the Tuesday, March 26th City Council Meeting, the ordinances will go into effect 30 in days.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 134 calls for service, there were 58 officer-initiated incidents, including 17 traffic stops, and a total of 11 officer reports taken.  Officers made 1 felony arrest, 4 misdemeanor arrests, issued 4 misdemeanor citations, and 2 infractions during the period of March 21, 2024 through March 27, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the two-week period of March 21, 2024 through March 27, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 289 inbound calls for service.  In addition, they responded to 31 incoming 911 calls.  All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins.  Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 21 calls for service last week, they were:  15 medicals, 1 mutual medical, 1 fire, 1 mutual aid fire, 1 traffic collision, and 2 public service.
