Meetings:
- City Council Meeting: June 24, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.
Miscellaneous:
- Our new Building Official started on Monday, June 16th. He was sworn in on Thursday.
- Staff continue to work on the Finance software upgrade. A lot of meetings and training took place this week. In the end the city will have a modern finance system. Soft timelines for go live dates for various modules. The recreation modules is scheduled to go live on July 1st. Staff will begin this transition, and information will be coming out soon to the public.
- Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget process is wrapping up. The budgets have been compiled, prepared, and presented to City Council. The Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget Resolution will be presented to City Council at the June 24th meeting.
- On Tuesday Staff kicked off the water and sewer rate study. This is critical to the water and sewer enterprise funds and the water and sewer infrastructure.
- On Wednesday I attended the NCCSIF Board of Director meeting for our liability and workers compensation insurance.
- On Thursday I stopped at the Chamber of Commerce Lunch and Learn event. There was a great presentation from ChicoStart Eva Shepard. Look for more of these great events coming soon. Get involved, get connected, and bring a friend!

The Planning Commission meeting for June 17th will be cancelled due to lack of agenda.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT:
Building Department Update: Welcoming our new Building Official
The department is pleased to announce the appointment of Benjamin Mierzwak as our new Building Official, Benjamin brings a strong background in code enforcement and building inspection, having previously served with the City of West Sacramento and Tehama County.
With his experience and commitment to public services, Benjamin is well-positioned to support the community’s development needs and ensure continued compliance with building safety standards.
We are also excited to share that with a full-time Building Official now in place, building services will be available during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, providing greater access and support services to residents and contractors.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:
It’s that time of year, The Planning Department is receiving a lot of code enforcement complaints, regarding residents not keeping their yards cleaned up, roaming chickens and people living in RV’s.
Staff is currently working with the owners of the TA Truck Stop to clean up their parking lot and removing the RV’s that have been staying there. Staff is also working with commercial vacant building owners to bring their properties into compliance.
The City has filed a mitigated negative declaration with CEQA net regarding commercial development on the West side of I-5 at South Ave. It is available for review at https://www.corning.org/current-notices/
The planning department received an application for a tentative map for a 61 Single Family Residence subdivision on Corona Ave. Staff will be reviewing and will plan to take it to the Planning Commission in the next couple months.
In a combined effort from the Building Department, The Police Department, The Fire Department, The Public Works Department along with the crew and the Tehama County Probation Department we were able to remove the squatters from 1216 South Street and board the property up. The legal council is in the process of serving the owner with receivership papers.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Patrol:
In addition to responding to 149 calls for service, there were 142 officer-initiated incidents, including 55 traffic stops, and a total of 26 officer reports were taken. Officers made 5 misdemeanor arrests, (1 of which was a juvenile), 7 felony arrests, (1 of which was a juvenile) issued 8 misdemeanor citations and 6 infractions during the period of June 11, 2025, through June 17, 2025.
Dispatch:
During the period of June 11, 2025, through June 17, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 273 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 43 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.
Training:
All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:
The Corning Volunteer Fire department responded to 22 calls for service last week, they were: 13 medicals, 6 fires, 2 traffic collisions and 1 public service.
Training:
The CVFD will be conducting training burns in the area of East and North Streets on Wednesday evenings.
