CITY MANAGER:

Meetings:

  • City Council Meeting: June 24, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • Corning Around the World event will be held on Saturday Evening. Be sure to get your passports(tickets) to attend this great event.
  • The newly hired Building Official is scheduled to start on Monday, June 16th. We look forward to onboarding him and working with him.
  • Staff has been working with the insurance adjuster on the Yost Park Snack Bar. We have met a contractor to look at the project and waiting to receive a project an estimate.
  • Staff continue to work on the finance software upgrade. A lot of meetings and training took place this week. In the end the city will have a modern finance system. Soft timelines for go live dates for various modules. Staff have also began training on various modules.
  • Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget process is wrapping up. The budgets have been compiled, prepared, and presented to City Council. We do expect a decline in the revenue and made adjustments accordingly. The Fiscal Year 2025/2026 Budget Resolution will be presented to City Council at the June 24th meeting.
  • On Thursday, June 12th I attended the Corning Cemetery District building dedication event.

CITY CLERK:

The Planning Commission meeting for June 17th will be cancelled due to lack of agenda.

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 1 vacant position

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:

Community Event/Street Impact:
Corning Around the World will take place this Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Solano Street will be closed between 3rd Street and 6th Street, along with 4th Street from Solano Street to the Yolo Street alleyway, to accommodate the event.

  • Street closure begins: Approximately 3:30 PM for event preparation.
  • Street reopens: Approximately 11:00 PM.
    We encourage residents and visitors to attend and enjoy the local vendors, food, and entertainment.

Current Project Updates:

Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project:
VSS International continues to make progress on the Tehama Street Rehabilitation Project.

  • Micro surfacing will be applied next week from June 16 – 18.
  • The city is working closely with the school to minimize the impact of pick up and drop off for the summer SERRF program.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

The Junior Giants season has begun, but registration is still open!

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

It’s that time of year, The Planning Department is receiving a lot of code enforcement complaints, regarding residents not keeping their yards cleaned up, roaming chickens and people living in RV’s.

Staff is currently working with the owners of the TA Truck Stop to clean up their parking lot and removing the RV’s that have been staying there. Staff is also working with commercial vacant building owners to bring their properties into compliance.

The City has filed a mitigated negative declaration with CEQA net regarding commercial development on the West side of I-5 at South Ave. It is available for review at https://www.corning.org/current-notices/

The City has filed the Environmental Assessment and the FONSI with the California Department of Housing and Community Development, (HCD) regarding the NEPA study of the City of Corning Plaza and Recreation Center. The comment period is open until June 19thhttps://www.corning.org/current-notices/.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 184 calls for service, there were 171 officer-initiated incidents, including 93 traffic stops, and a total of 26 officer reports were taken. Officers made 12 misdemeanor arrests, 1 felony arrest, issued 11 misdemeanor citations and 8 infractions during the period of June 4, 2025, through June 10, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of June 4, 2025, through June 10, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 338 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 51 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 21 calls for service last week, they were: 15 medicals, 2 fires, 2 traffic collisions, 1 public service and 1 investigation.

Training:

The CVFD will be doing training burns on Wednesday nights for the next several weeks.

Message from the Chief:

All burning in the City limits is suspended until October.
