Miscellaneous:

  • Staff would like to congratulate Building Official, Benjamin Mierzwak, he successfully completed the final exam in the Building Official Certification process and is now a Certified Building Official.
  • City Council approved a letter of support for Tehama County Transportation Commission’s application to the U.S. Department of Transportation Innovative Finance and Asset Concession Program. Supporting this effort aligns with the City of Corning’s goals of enhancing rural tourism, expanding transportation access, attracting private investment, and fostering responsible development.
  • We would like to congratulate Brett White he has been promoted to Assistant Public Works Director. His first day in this role will be September 1st.
  • On September 4th at 5:00p.m. in the City Council Chambers a public meeting will be held regarding Community Development Block Grant Program Income Funds the City intends to apply for to resurface the parking lot at Clark Park.
  • The next Tuesday Night Market is scheduled for September 2nd. It is shaping up to be one of the best ever markets. Come down and check out the Hometown Heros that will be present!
  • Bids for the Recreation Center and Community Plaza are due on September 9th. We look forward to the bids being received.
  • Code Enforcement remains active. Citizens can do their part by keeping properties clean and clear of debris and follow State laws and City codes.

Airport Commission – 2 vacant positions

Library Commission – 1 vacant position

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

BUILDING DEPARTMENT:

This week, the Building Division received nine new permit applications and completed ten inspections. Projects that were able to be finalized include two solar installations, a residential HVAC system, and a commercial tenant improvement.

The building official participated in the International Code Councils Shasta Cascade Chapters inspector exchange. These exchanges provide opportunities for jurisdictions to share best practices and ensure consistency in code enforcement

Safety Spotlight: Exit signs save lives. The glowing green or red signs are not just traditional- studies show people follow them instinctively, even in smoke-filled or panic situations.

 

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:

Airport Infrastructure Grant:

Staff has received an agreement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG), Project No. 3-06-0053-013-2025, at Corning Municipal Airport. The agreement will be presented to City Council on September 9th for approval. This project will repair the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system, which consists of runway threshold lights that provide pilots with visual descent guidance during final approach.

Crew Work Schedule:

  • The crew will switch back to their regular hours (7 AM -3:30 PM) Tuesday September 2, 2025. The meter reader will remain on his regular schedule (8 AM – 4:30 PM).

Street Impact – Tuesday Night Market:

The Corning Tuesday Night Market will take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Solano Street will be closed between 3rd Street and 6th Street to accommodate the event.

  • Street closure begins: Approximately 3:30 PM for event preparation.
  • Street reopens: Following the conclusion of the event.
    We encourage residents and visitors to attend and enjoy the local vendors, food, and entertainment.

Water:

  • With the hot weather, water leaks continue to pop up. The Public Works crew has been working diligently to address each one as they come up.

Hydrant Replacement:

  • The Public Works Crew worked with the Fire Department to identify Fire Hydrants in need of replacement. As they work on replacing them there will be temporary water shut-offs in the surrounding areas. Notifications will be distributed prior to any water shut-offs.

Corning Well Project:

Well Industries Inc was awarded the contract at the August 26th City Council Meeting. Work will begin early September.

Toomes Ave waterline Infill Project:

Lamb Unlimited was awarded the contract at the August 26th City Council Meeting. Work will begin early September.

City of Corning Plaza and Recreation Center – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at https://www.corning.org/project-bid-opportunities/ or www.publicpurchase.com. Due to the tight turnaround the bid opening date has been extended, bids are now due by 3:00 PM on September 9th.

Updates on Code Enforcement:

1216 South St – Legal Council is working with the court on receivership appointment.

1518 Marin St – A summons was posted on the property on August 19th, 2025.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 160 calls for service, there were 113 officer-initiated incidents, including 47 traffic stops, and a total of 23 officer reports were taken. Officers made 8 misdemeanor arrests, 8 felony arrests, (1 of which was a juvenile),  issued 11 misdemeanor citations and 6 infractions during the period of August 20, 2025, through August 26, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of August 20, 2025, through August 26, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 354 inbound calls for service and made 112 outbound calls. In addition, they responded to 38 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

Officer Barry attended a Traffic Collision Investigation course in Sacramento.

Event:

Come to the September 2nd Tuesday Night Market to see a demonstration by Officer Ross and K9 Ghost! We hope to see you there.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 21 calls for service last week, they were: 12 medicals, 2 fires, 1 traffic collision, 2 public service, 2 investigations and 2 hazardous conditions.

Reminder: the street or sidewalk is not a place to put your tree trimmings or discarded furniture.  The City picks up leaves ONLY in the fall.
