- We would like to congratulate Brett White he has been promoted to Assistant Public Works Director. His first day in this role will be September 1st.
- We will be recognizing Sr. Citizens via a proclamation at the next City Council meeting. Sr. Citizens Day was August 21st.
- On Wednesday morning, the Tehama County Probation Work crew was in Corning to clean up the area near I-5, Just south of the Solano Street northbound off ramp. Thank you to the Probation Department and their crews for the work they do!
- On September 4th at 5:00p.m. in the City Council Chambers a public meeting will be held regarding Community Development Block Grant Program Income Funds the City intends to apply for to resurface the parking lot at Clark Park.
- I met with the City Manager of Orland and the City Manager from Red Bluff to share information.
- The next Tuesday Night Market is scheduled for September 2nd. It is shaping up to be one of the best ever markets. Come down and check out the Hometown Heros that will be present!
- Bids for the Recreation Center and Community Plaza are due on September 2nd. We look forward to the bids being received.
- The pool is scheduled stay open with a limited schedule of activities and public swim on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC. The pool will remain open from August 12th through August 28th.
- Code Enforcement remains active. Citizens can do their part by keeping properties clean and clear of debris and follow State laws and City codes.
- We are grateful for the partnership with the Corning Union Elementary School District to be able to offer a School Resource Officer (SRO) for the Elementary schools in Corning.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT:
This week, the Building Division received eleven new permit applications and completed five inspections. In addition, the Building Official participated in a training course focused on the California Residential Code wall bracing provisions.
Activity at the public counter remains steady, with homeowners, contractors, and business owners regularly seeking information about ongoing and upcoming projects. The Building Division remains committed to delivering timely, accurate, and responsive service to the community.
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:
Crew Work Schedule:
- The crew will switch back to their regular hours (7 AM -3:30 PM) Tuesday September 2, 2025. The meter reader will remain on his regular schedule (8 AM – 4:30 PM).
Water:
- With the hot weather, water leaks continue to pop up. The Public Works crew has been working diligently to address each one as they come up.
Current Projects:
Corning Well Project- The bid deadline for the Corning Well Project was Wednesday, July 30th at 2:00 PM. The City received three (3) bid submissions. Staff is currently reviewing the bid packets for completeness and compliance. The lowest responsive and responsible bid will be presented to City Council for approval on August 26th.
Toomes Ave waterline Infill Project- The bid deadline for the Toomes Ave Waterline Infill Project was Tuesday, August 19 at 2:00 PM. The City received twelve (12) bid submissions. Staff will present the lowest responsive and responsible bid to the City Council on Tuesday August 26th.

Updates on Code Enforcement:
1216 South St – Legal Council is working with the court on receivership appointment.
1518 Marin St – A summons was posted on the property on August 19th, 2025.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Patrol:
In addition to responding to 130 calls for service, there were 203 officer-initiated incidents, including 116 traffic stops, and a total of 25 officer reports were taken. Officers made 12 misdemeanor arrests, (3 of which were juveniles), 3 felony arrests, (1 of which was a juvenile), issued 9 misdemeanor citations, 3 unclassified, and 5 infractions during the period of August 13, 2025, through August 19, 2025.
Dispatch:
During the period of August 13, 2025, through August 19, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 233 inbound calls for service and made 76 outbound calls. In addition, they responded to 35 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.
Training:
Sergeant Curiel and Detective McIntyre attended the California Homicide Investigators Association conference in Las Vegas.
Event:
We attended the 5th Annual Tehama County K9 Foundation Fundraiser on Friday, August 15th, at A&R Meats in Red Bluff. Officer Ross and K9 Ghost performed apprehension demonstrations, Chief Bassett took his turn in the dunk tank, and we met lots of great people from the community. The event was a success!
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:
The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 16 calls for service last week, they were: 11 medicals, 2 fires, 1 traffic collision and 2 public service.
Message from the Chief:
Saturday at the CVFD sponsored blood drive we were able to collect 23 units of blood. Thank you all who participated!!
Last Thursday the CVFD cooked sunrise breakfast for the CUHS senior class.
